  • Will a structural engineer always need to visit my property?
Not necessarily. In most cases, depending on the information provided and the job type, we can complete work without an inspection. There are various reasons why we would need to attend the site for an inspection. These include: - If there is structural damage and evidence needs to be collected, - The architect on a design job has provided incomplete information, - Scheduled inspections during different stages of construction (however, these can also be done virtually in some instances).
  • What can I expect when I contact Guardian Consulting Engineers?
We are dedicated to providing you with an exceptional customer experience and look forward to hearing from you. When you submit an enquiry, you can expect a member of our front office team to get back to you to collect further information and determine whether consultation with an engineer is required at that time. They will then forward all information to the engineering team for a quotation. After the quote is prepared, the front office team will send it to you. Once your quote is accepted, communications will then be handled by the engineering team until the job is complete.
  • How will I be charged for the service?
We charge site inspections hourly and design fees at a fixed 'lump-sum' rate. You will receive a quote detailing all costs before work begins so that you will not have surprises upon completion. We charge an hourly rate if changes occur after your job is complete. However, we will try to keep these fees to a minimum and will let you know before starting whether any additional costs will be charged.
  • When do I need to make the payment?
We require payment to be received on all projects before releasing any certified documents.
  • I have received documents from a structural engineer. However, they are not signed. Are you able to provide certification for their work?
Whilst we prefer not to engage ourselves in projects that another engineer has started, we are happy to consult with you if you have serious concerns. However, if we were to accept your job, our method would be to start the job again so that we can take on the entire liability for the structural design work.
  • Can you provide certification for unauthorised work?
Yes. To be able to provide certification, we would first need to attend your site to view the unauthorised works and take measurements to ensure that the structure and foundations of the building are strong enough to avoid collapse. If further work needs to be done to bring the project up to Australian standards, we will provide you with a recommendation to do this. Once the works are deemed structurally compliant, we can then provide certification.
  • How do I know whether I need an inspection by a structural engineer?
You will first approach a building inspector, who will then flag any issues that need further examination and scientific analysis. Once a structural engineer has looked at these issues, they will use engineering principles and Australian standards to evaluate whether structural damage is within allowable tolerances; if outside tolerance, they can suggest rectifications.
